Water Softeners
These are used in hard water areas to eliminate the effects of scale deposits within the pipe work, boiler and water cylinder. Water is passed over a layer of beads lined with sodium, to help reduce the calcium and magnesium content of the water.
Water bylaws demand that a separate tap provide un-softened water (This is a UK-only bylaw; no such law is present in the USA or in continental Europe).
